The Banished Bride Scandalous Secrets Series Book 1 edition by Andrea Pickens Romance eBooks
This is the fourth or fifth book I've read by Andrea Pickens and it's the least successful. It's still pretty good, but read one of her higher rated books first to get a better introduction to her talent as a writer. I liked the plot and characters, and totally disagree with the reviewers who say Aurora became a doormat towards the end. She feels broken hearted for a few chapters so she seems sad, but she's still feisty and not willing to be pushed around. Alex redeems himself, and I liked that it didn't happen instantaneously. He comes to realize he's been a jerk, then he wrestles with what he's going to do about it and ultimately changes his mind a few times about what he really wants. It seemed realistic to me.The one thing I didn't like in this book was the extensive repetition of inner thoughts about how much Alex and Aurora desire each other. There's A LOT of inner monologuing and mostly about the same topics which gets repetitive and boring. I mostly skimmed these parts to get back to the dialogue and action which was very good. My other complaint is poor editing (ie: thong instead of throng, inking instead of inkling, missing prepositions and articles). There's almost an error on every page. Overall this is a good book, though not the best example of Pickens' work.

The Banished Bride Scandalous Secrets Series Book 1 edition by Andrea Pickens Romance eBooks Reviews
Alex wanted a set of colors, that is the only reason he agreed to marry the bride his bully of a father won in a card game. The bride had no choice, she was underage.Alex left for India with his regiment immediately after the ceremony.Ten years later, after he inherited the title,Alex meets a fascinating women while on a secret mission to catch a French spy .It's his wife, but they don't know each other.Andrea handles this comedy of errors with great skill and just the right amount of humor.
The story was well written and the story line well structured. The author drew the reader in and kept our attention until the very end. She also allowed us to experience her characters many emotions throughout the story. The story had intrigue, suspense, discoveries, betrayal, love, and a happily ever after.
I very much enjoyed this book !!!! It really brings to light how the FEW held so much power !!! The children of these wicked fools were helpless in the hands of their fathers who had gave little or no thought to their lives !!! The twists and turns to get to their ending are really interesting and hold lots of suspense. I enjoyed the history of Ms Pickens writings and it make me appreciate the strides made in our civilization !!!! Thank you for a very good read !!!!!
Not quite up to the author's "usual" standards, but it could be that this book pre-dated some of the first ones that I read. The plot was overly simplistic, there was not as much of a setting or surrounding activity to give the two main characters more depth. The majority of the story was concentrated on the both characters struggle with whether or not they should be drawn to the other, and the sub-plot of danger and spies was a mere footnote. Contrasted with "Lady of Letters" and "Devil May Care" where supporting characters are given more of a voice, and settings went beyond secluded hideouts, conducive to tete-a-tetes, this was like reading a first draft. It was cute, it had its moments, but was not as satisfying.
This is a sweet book, with a couple well-handled love scenes that aren't going to embarrass anyone. It begins with the total creep fathers of our heroine and hero to be gambling long after they should have stopped. In the end, the hero (third son of an earl), ends up getting married to the heroine, at this time very young, and small, bundled into her mother's wedding dress (multiple sizes too large). Alex (the hero) promptly leaves for the army and India. His bride is supposed to be sent to his estate, but instead goes with her former governess to a rather remote location, where she lives as a widow, using the third of her names - Aurora.
For entertainment, she rescues abused women. For entertainment, he continues in the army, moving from India to Europe. Meanwhile, his father dies. His oldest brother dies. His next brother dies, and just like that, he is out of the army, on his way home, as an earl. With one last case.
The story of how the two meet, and ultimately begin a real marriage, is what this book really presents. There is light humor as the two of them grapple with the comedy or errors set in motion by their accidental meeting, and a few places where I felt truly sorry for people. Just mostly, they were the other guys that fell in love with Aurora.
An unwilling and unwanted bride at 14, Aurora is abandoned while her groom returns to military service. She doesn't wish to spend her life exiled to a remote and lonely estate, so she contrives to use her husband's money to fashion a life for herself. Years later, she has accepted her fate and has found peace, if not happiness, while he comes home to start annulment proceedings. Accidentally, they meet, but don't recognize each other - and so the story begins. It sounded like a good premise for a book, Pickens is a talented writer and I didn't really hesitate to order this book.
I enjoyed the opening chapters, but lost interest shortly after they met and began to interact. Something was missing, and I'm really not sure what it was. It might have been that the relationship proceeded too quickly from suspicion to lust. It didn't feel plausible and seemed disjointed. Maybe there was too much guilt by both parties that made the relationship uncomfortable to watch. Whatever it was, I'm sorry to say I didn't really enjoy this book as much as I hoped I would. It's not a bad read, but it's not an exceptionally good one either. I just can't recommend it, despite the fact I've enjoyed several of her other works.
